The inventory is mainly based on industry data and is completed, where necessary, by secondary data.64Average data for Europe. Profiles for specific companies may vary from the average. No further restrictions.OSB is made of three layers of strands. These strands are dispersed in such a way that they are staggered at 90° to one another in the three layers. Moistened with glue resin, the strands are pressed to a board on a conti-roll press by applying both heat and pressure. The strands are predominantly made up of pine or spruce wood and have a length of 10 to 15 cm and a width of approx. 2 to 3 cm. For the central part, MDI-glue (Methylen diphenyl isocyanate) is used and MUPF (Melamine-Urea-Phenol-Resin) glue is used for the upper layer. Within the production of Oriented Strand Boards the key elements in the production are the strander in which strands are produced. The dry strands are metered into the Blender where they are tumbled into a rotating drum with a fine mist of wax and resin. The resin and / or wax bonds the strands in the pressing process and enhances the moisture resilience of the board. The coated strands are then conveyed overhead to the forming line where a mat of flakes is laid on a continuous belt conveyor by a cut-off saw. This mat is loaded in a press where, under high temperature and pressure, a sheet of OSB is formed. In the finishing area the product is trimmed and cut to produce the finished OSB board (CEI-BOIS). Residues from production (e.g from stranding and trimming) are re-used in the production process including for heat production. According to CEI-BOIS OSB/III is produced at 11 sites within Europe, which is considered in the modelled. The same capacitiy is estimated for each site as well as the same share of energy provided from wood residues use related to specific grid energy consumption. The background system is addressed as follows: Electricity, Thermal energy: The electricity (and thermal energy as by-product) used is modelled according to the individual country-specific situation. The country-specific modelling is achieved on multiple levels. Firstly the individual power plants in service are modelled according to the current national grid. This includes net losses and imported electricity. Second, the national emission and efficiency standards of the power plants are modelled. Third, the country-specific fuel supply (share of resources used, by import and / or domestic supply) including the country-specific properties (e.g. element and energy contents) are accounted for. Fourth, the import, transport, mining and exploration processes for the energy carrier supply chain are modelled according to the specific situation of each power-producing country. The different mining and exploration techniques (emissions and efficiencies) in the different exploration countries are accounted for according to current engineering knowledge and information. Steam: The steam supply is modelled according to the individual country-specific situation with regard to the technology efficiencies and energy carriers used. Efficiencies range from 84% to 94% in relation to the representative energy carrier (gas, oil, coal). Coal, crude oil and natural gas used for the generation of steam are modelled according to the specific import situation (see electricity). Transports: All relevant and known transport processes used are included. Overseas transport including rail and truck transport to and from major ports for imported bulk resources are included. Furthermore all relevant and known pipeline and / or tanker transport of gases and oil imports are included. Energy carriers: Coal, crude oil, natural gas and uranium are modelled according to the specific import situation (see electricity). Refinery products: Diesel, gasoline, technical gases, fuel oils, basic oils and residues such as bitumen are modelled via a country-specific, refinery parameterized model. The refinery model represents the current national standard in refinery techniques (e.g. emission level, internal energy consumption,...) as well as the individual country-specific product output spectrum, which can be quite different from country to country. Hence the refinery products used show the individual country-specific use of resources. The supply of crude oil is modelled, again, according to the country-specific crude oil situation with the respective properties of the resources.OSB III boards are standard technical products for load-bearing in dry and wet / moist conditions and used for buildings and decoration.PE_LBP-GaBi_Construction_35_OSB_ingred_cccdb365-45f1-4bf4-8f77-06dbba3f85da.pdfPE_LBP-GaBi_Construction_OSB_0b1ac3d1-3960-11dd-ae16-0800200c9a66.jpgPE_LBP-GaBi_Construction_OSB_b_0b1aeae1-3960-11dd-ae16-0800200c9a66.jpgLCI resultAttributionalNoneAllocation - massAllocation - market valueAllocation - volumeAllocation - exergetic contentThe mass flow of wood (carbon chain) is allocated by mass to secure the carbon dioxide balance within the life cycle. For the combined heat and power production, allocation by exergetic content is applied. For the electricity generation and by-products, e.g. gypsum, allocation by market value is applied due to no common physical properties. Within the refinery allocation by net calorific value and mass is used. For the combined crude oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids production allocation by net calorific value is applied.Wood residues from the board manufacture are re-used for energy production. The carbon dioxide incorporation is assumed to be 1.85 kg CO2 per kg wood (absolute dry). All data used in the calculation of the LCI results refer to net calorific value.NoneCut-off rules for each unit process: Coverage of at least 95 % of mass and energy of the input and output flows, and 98 % of their environmental relevance (according to expert judgement).NoneThe relevant European plants were selected to collect data, average glue system modeled in all plants.
