The inventory is mainly based on industry data and is complemented, where necessary, by secondary data.2represents a global and unified applied technologyThe existing inland waterway ship categories in the database were matched with actual ships utilised for inland waterway transport, as documented by the Versuchsanstalt für Binnenschiffbau e.V. (VBD) in 2004. The VBD provided current technical information, including the average ship speed, utilisation ratio of the drive capacity and the fuel consumption, in cases of both current and canal waterways. The fuel consumption [in kg/h] was calculated linearly according to load from the utilisation capacity from 0% (empty) to 100% (fully loaded), with the known empty and full load capacities. The fuel consumption [in kg diesel/kg load] was then calculated taking into account the average speed of the ship [km/h], distance [km] and the maximum payload capacity [dwt]. The fuel consumption was then graphed against the capacity utilisation, which resulted in a downward sloping, concave upward curve whose corresponding power equation was of the form y=ax^-b (where y is the fuel consumption, and x is the capacity utilisation).
Inputs to the inland waterway ships are fuel and cargo. Outputs are cargo and combustion emissions. Vessel production, end of life treatment of the vessel and the fuel supply chain (such as emissions from exploration, refinery and transportation) are not included in this data set.
Emission factors of emissions typically emitted from the diesel engines of inland waterway ships, consisting of NOx, NMVOC, CH4, CO, NH3, N2O and PM, were updated based on CORINAIR's Emission Inventory Guidebook from December 2006. The emission factors for CO2 and SO2 were obtained from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Revised Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories from 2006.Diesel mix at refineryDiesel mix at refineryDiesel mix at refinery< Transport > Standard transport of packaged goods with a payload of up to x tonnes for long distance transport over inland waterways.Transport_inland ship_GLO.jpg0.650.110[1] [-] Average capacity utilisation by mass (default 0,65)10000[2] [km] distance start - end, default = 100 km(0.0052*Cap_utilisation^-0.9476*Load_actual*Distance)762.5902749726640[6] [kg] Diesel total consumption1500*Cap_utilisation9750[5] [t] payload5000[3] [ppm] sulphur content in diesel, default Europe = 10 ppm0.05010[4] [-] share of biogenic C in fuelFuel_consumpt/(Load_actual*1000)0.0007821438717668350[7] [kg/kg] Diesel per kg cargoSpec_consumpt*(Share_CO2_bio)3.91071935883418E-50[8] [gCO2/kg] CO2 emission, biogenic CO2 share of CO2 emissionSpec_consumpt*(1-Share_CO2_bio)0.0007430366781784930[9] [gCO2/kg] CO2 emission, fossil CO2 share of CO2 emissionS_content_fuel/1000000*2*Spec_consumpt7.82143871766835E-80[10] [kg] SO2 emissionUnit process, single operationAttributionalNoneNot applicableNoneAll data used in the calculation of the LCI results refer to net calorific value.NoneGaBi Modelling PrinciplesGaBi Water Modelling PrinciplesGaBi Agriculture Model DocumentationGaBi Land Use Change Model DocumentationGaBi Energy Modelling PrinciplesGaBi Refinery Modelling PrinciplesCut-off rules for each unit process: Coverage of at least 95 % of mass and energy of the input and output flows, and 98 % of their environmental relevance (according to expert judgement).

The data set allows individual settings of the variable parameters, including the distance, cargo load and utilization ratio. Default values of the variable parameters must be reviewed and adjusted for each individual use. The data set does not include the fuel supply route, therefore the fuel supply data set must be linked with this data set.All relevant flows quantifiedCML2001 - Apr. 2015, Photochem.
